I am testing both of the laptops now and will conclude on keeping one and selling the other, I am still unsure how I feel about the x1e2 as it felt very sluggish out of the box but I have fixed that(a bit) by switching to 'discrete only gpu' in BIOS and switching over to pop!_os. I have been using the MBP '16 for a little under two years now and have recently been given a x1 extreme gen 2 4k display. I have a MBP 2016 and a x1 extreme gen 2, so maybe I could help.
